Why Obama invite Sergeant James Crowley and Harvard don Prof. Henry Louis Gates for beer instead of tea or coffee?

At least to me "having a beer" with someone denotes that you are friends with (or at least friendly with ) them at some level.
For instance, when Bush was the pres, it was common to hear that "he is a guy you would like to have a beer with" (usually followed by a description of his flaws).
Having tea or coffee just doesn't have the same connotation.
They might work in England though...

M$I think President Obama does need to be careful not to demean the office by making himself too cool and casual. I'm not saying that he is wrong to have a beer with them. I am just saying that he needs to remember what the office of the presidency represents and be willing to keep himself in check based on that. It's the same as any serious position in the country. For example, presidents and CEO's of companies have to keep their behavior in line with the image of the country and their positions. When you are wearing a military uniform, a police uniform (or really any uniform), you are representing more than yourself and have to keep you behavior in check. Brides at a wedding and graduates at a ceremony need to respect the event and keep their behavior in check accordingly for the sake of those attending. There is a difference between being yourself and causing people to lose respect for the role. Imagine if the joint chiefs of staff decided publicly throw weekly pool parties. We could lose respect for their positions and authority.

What @briansan above noted. Just a custom that President Obama has.
My only other guess is that it is a German Oktoberfest custom?
seriously this is noted here about the origination of that custom:
