Having served with the United Nations in Egypt and the Sinai in particular, I would say that the reason Israel left the Sinai was for a few reasons ....
First, there isn't too much there other than sand, so not much potential for growth! Then, strategically, to hold a position like the Sinai would have stretched the Israeli supply lines all the way to the eastern door of Egypt - the Suez Canal. Not an enviable position.
Also, the Suez Canal is used by other nations to move a vast amount of goods. International pressure, I am sure, went into play - who would want their ships going between two hostiles separated only by the width of the Suez? With MY ships in the middle?
