Why isn't Windows 7 a service pack upgrade to Windows Vista?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For the same reason that Windows Vista isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows XP, and Windows XP isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows NT and Windows NT isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows 98 and Windows 98 isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows 95 and Windows 95 isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.1 isn't a service pack upgrade to Windows 3.0.

(I think I got the succession right there... maybe)

Regardless, the reason MS was so gung-ho to get a new OS out there instead of just upgrading Vista is because Vista has gotten a HORRIBLE reputation since it came out. Everyone and there mother thinks Vista is just terrible. So MS isn't trying to salvage the name, they're trying to release a brand new product with (more importantly) a new name.

Consider a businessman who buys a restaurant. If the restaurant is doing very well and has a good reputation, he'll leave the name the same and try to make the change in ownership as transparent as possible. If it could be doing better, but has a loyal following, he might put up a sign saying "Under New Management". But if the restaurant is doing horribly and people actively avoid it, he's more likely to change the name, the signs, the uniforms, etc, and make people think it's a completely new restaurant.

Vista is the old restaurant everyone hates. Windows 7 is the completely new restaurant.

1. The two are too different structurally.
2. Microsoft wants to abandon the "Vista" brand as soon as possible, as it is the brand that's given them the worst reputation since Me.

Personal experience, been using Windows 7 primarily for months and am using it to write this right now!

Microsoft would probably say because it's a totally new Operating system, but it really isn't too far from Vista. The main real reason they're releasing it as a totally new OS, is because they want to make more money, and they want to get a lot of the people who didn't upgrade to Vista (especially all the netbooks that can't run Vista, that are using XP, or Linux) to use Windows 7.

Also Windows 7 has a lot of new UI bits especially the changed taskbar, so that'll help people think it's not just improved Vista.
