I am a big fan of Charlie Sheen (Harper) and I always try not to miss any episode of Two and a Half Men. There can be many a reason so as to why it is the #1 comedy show on TV, but I think there are 2-1/2 reasons (Harper, Alan and Jake) These three (rather 2.5) make this show a big hit. The title supports the characters and the characters support both the story and the title.
What does "Two and a Half Men" means?" The is a show about two men, Harper and Alan (Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer) and a kid, Jake (Angus Jones). The two men have peaked as far as the growth or change is considered. Men do not change as long as they are men. They would rather die or kill than to change. Harper and Alan are men. Rigid, inflexible, hard, always ready to defend their cause. Whereas Jake lies the midway between a youth and an adult. He is a half-man that means he is still growing and will take some time to become a man. Within Jake lies a possibility to change to become anything like Harper, Alan, some other guy or a completely different person. He is flexible and can adjust and accommodate unlike Harper and Alan. Also, Harper and Alan are two extremes of human social behavior and a way of living the life, about what your vision of life is. One is a drunken womanizer, the other is a doctor and completely opposite of the first.
The show also mirrors the social values which oscillate or struggles between imposed morality on one end and unacceptable free will on the other. The half-man (Jake) has to decide which way he will go during his course of becoming an adult.
