Why is today a considered marijuana smoking holiday by many?
I am in no way advocating this practice, and I think if anything, today should be a day that people should put down their drugs, and besides, its Monday (a weekday).
Anyone have an idea why people think this?

According to the HighTimes, "the value of 420 origin stories is much like that of repeated storytelling in a close-knit family. Stories--whether true, false, or embellished--strengthen the family's sense of belonging, identity, and values, bringing it closer together (1)." The article explains further that 420, regardless of its origins, is considered a holiday today because of this intense bonding and the sense of family it creates. It also creates a worldwide community of smokers, kind of like the World Jump Day idea (2).
In other words, like with any holiday, it unifies friends, family and strangers under a common tradition that reinforces the sense of belonging that we all crave.

M$Although unreliable sources point to a man's claim about high school in the 70's (High times is about as reliable as the National Enquirer), it appears this number code thing was popularized by the rock group the Grateful Dead in the 1990's and their fans. They are all too stoned to care about the origins of words and phrases. It's a shame they didn't pick some other day though.
Can you link directly to the page that talks about that stuff? Please? :-)
Snopes, which is an Urban Legend busting site not a rumor site, gives plenty of information about the origin and non-origin of 420: http://www.snopes.com/language/stories/420.aspnd
I remember the 60's myself and there was no such number or date around then.
It is not even remotely likely that anyone would be smoking cannibis to celebrate Hitler's birthday, let alone anyone "in the ghetto".
No offense albanian, but this all has nothing to do with why people get together and smoke on 4-20 (April 20th)
The whole thing has been going on for longer than 1971, people in the ghetto would get together on april 20th to congregate and get high.
People in the ghetto STILL get together on 4/20 to congregate and get high.
It all strands from one thing, Adolph Hitlers birthday, its sad but its the truth.
Another words, don't believe everything you read on rumor sites.
Rumor sites also said that the bible predicted 9/11
(Firey brothers in the sky and such).
People like to makup their own crazy narcissism when they haven't even experienced the phenomena for themselves.
@xds-do you have any evidence to support this idea? I don't remember any one from Hunter's Point that said anything about 420.

and i thought it would be a perfect answer for your question

M$I could tell you, but your not going to believe it, it's considered a "Marijuana Smoking Holiday" because today believe it or not is considered by many to be Adolph Hitlers birthday.
Adolph Hitler , April 20th 1889 - 1945

It's sad but true.
People in the modern ghetto would actually celebrate Hitlers birthday by smoking and getting high as kites.
That reminds me , there is somewhere i need to be........
.....
=P jk

M$You give a Wikipedia source for Hitler's birthday, but what is your source connecting his birthday to 420?
If it's just your crazy azz friends, I can assure you that I have more than my share of stoner friends and they don't second your Hitler idea.
There have been sooooo many stupid questions about this.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090414164313AAPyLLF
The whole thing all originates from Hitler, all i can say is ask anyone who has ever smoked weed.
On that note, .... There is somewhere i need to be :P
@albanian @bugsandinsects , Well you guys can think what you want, my grandmother (who is over 100 and a holocaust survivor BTW) even knows the whole thing spawns from the ghetto, its an old tradition and i stand behind my answer 300%.
By the way the whole thing about my crazy friends was a lame attempt at humor given the subject.
@albanian Yes, the date format would be date/month/year, but Americans could have just as easily changed it around to match their format. We don't say "Dutch inheritance taxes were reduced 21 April"; we say they were reduced "April 21st".
@xds My issue isn't what you're saying, but that you cannot provide a verifiable source. Mahalo users can't check the information with your grandmother. I understand that you don't want to incriminate yourself, but providing factual information does not incriminate you unless you have to do something illegal to access it. For instance, I could provide endless information on a local cannabis club, but that information is accessible to the public and providing it does not mean that I smoke.
An absurd hypothesis with no source.
xds, if you are serious about suggesting the original, Jewish ghettos of Europe, that makes no sense. European dates go day, month, year. America (and a few influenced countries) is the only one that uses month/day/year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_date
Also, using numeric month/day as a way of saying the date is a very recent usage, although I'm not sure when it started.
Yeah here is a source confirming hitlers birthday.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler
And the source of this congregation is something of a "skulls society" metaphorical . It's like me saying ...
Yeah people be smoken,.... no i don't smoke.
I can't give you a source without actually incriminating myself or soliciting to its affect.
@viridicus
I do respect what you are saying about providing a source, but sometimes the proof is in the proverbial pudding. No mahalo users can not obviously ask my grandparents. I would never wish that torture on anyone anyway :o)
And it's not just a question of criminality but also of credibility.
It's really just "one of those things" , when something becomes as common and traditional as eating fish on friday, there really isn't a way i could provide a source for a tradition that has been spawned over generations.
You guys can either take my word for it or vote me down.
All in all i will stick to my answer, the hole thing SPAWNED because of Hitlers birthday.
And i'm def. sure about one thing this tradition goes WAaaaaay further back then the 70's and 60's
I've been smoking weed since 1969 and I have never heard any one but you suggest this. I lived in San Francisco, San Jose, San, Pablo, Concord, and Crockett and smoked dope in all of those places and I have never heard this.
By the way, in canada , it's actually celebrated as international crime day.
You are merely saying that 4/20 is Hitler's birthday. Yes, this is true, but HOW is it connected to smoking marijuana?
Do you have a source?
