Why is Thursday such a popular drinking night? There are a bunch of rowdy drunk people loudly singing the chicken dance outside my window!

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In college towns, Thursday is the party night since a lot of students will head home on weekends. In Summer months, Friday is "travel to the cottage" night so, again, Thursday is the party night.

People expect less productivity on Friday, being hungover on Wednesday is not good, but Friday you can get away with it.

I work in a bar district, most Bars have Thursday night specials on drinks and covers. So there may not be more people partying but they may be rowdier and hence appear to be more active.

It's spring break for a lot of places, I'm sure that's definitely a factor of the drunken chicken dancing.

The Thursday trend is definitely not a Spring Break thing in particular. It just seems to be an unusually popular night at bars (as opposed to other week nights).

The noise is much worse in the summer when people congregate outside the nearby bar to smoke as there's no smoking allowed in bars. As I type this, there's icky smoke wafting in the window... ICK!

As @pazaq mentioned above, Thursday nights are popular drinking nights for college students and I know that up here in Canada, bar owners have capitalized on this. In an attempt to draw crowds in on nights other than Fridays and Saturdays, many clubs will offer student specials on Thursdays.

Depending on your location, (working class, offices, downtown, suburbs) my best guess as to why it's "Thirsty Thursday" is: It is probably payday. We had that same dilemma for a while in an area where alot of people work together, they play together, and they do that just after they get paid. It also seems that when the going gets tough, recession, or whatever, they spend more of the money they can't afford to on the things they really can't afford at all.

Wow! Where are you? Are they really singing the Chicken dance? Which version of the song? There are no standard lyrics. I mostly hear it at the Oktoberfest here in New Orleans. The most popular version here starts " I don't wanna be a chicken, I don't wanna be a chicken! I wanna be a duck! Quack Quack Quack!"

New York City... It's the chicken dance tune like I remember hearing at some (middle school?) dances years and years ago. There aren't specific words but the melody as:

duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh
duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh
duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh
CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!

In this case, they were practically yellowing/screaming the duh-nuh-nuh stuff above and then clapping loudly. After 10 minutes of this I actually tried to stick my head out the window to see what the heck they were doing!

Gosh, they must not know any of the hundreds of versions written in most of the world's languages. They must have been trying to dance without a band. It's pretty popular at weddings and bar mitzvahs as well as German fests, but I've never heard of random drinkers breaking out into it.

I left out a quack in my version above, there should be four. The rest of the verses deal with other animals. It was originally an accordion instrumental piece, and all the attempts at verses have fallen far short of the popularity of the dance.

If you live in a college town it's popular because a lot of students schedule M W and T TH classes to give themselves long weekends. I know that is the case here at WVU!
source(s):
I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to all the people that picked WVU in their bracket as did I.
