Why is there such animosity between Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans?

Since Star Wars and Star Trek were released the sci-fi world has been divided into two parts; Star Wars fans or Star Trek fans (aka Trekkies). There has been a long history of the two sides debating which movie is better. They debate everything from specific characters to what movie more accurately protrays what will likely happen in our future. The debates are unending and fans almost never switch sides once they have chosen one. Is there a reason why there is so much animosity between the fans?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Personally I believe this has to do with the way things are perceived and you’re usually more of a fan of one than the other. I feel that even if you like both, usually you like one over the other. Since they are in competition with one another, if you like one over the other, you tend to stick up for it.

From my knowledge, it is usually more mainstream people who like Star Wars and the actually “geeks and nerds” that enjoy the Star Trek. I have noticed this from my friends, family and on T.V. There also seems more terminology and actual science involved with the Star Trek. I think that possibly the “geeks and nerds” think that Star Wars is inferior and a copy cat by product of sorts.

My favorite is Star Wars and I am not extremely smart as far as tech, math and science goes. My brother loves Star Trek, he is a brainiac!

This is a false perception perpetuated by the media and unrealistic portrayals of geek culture. While there are some fans of each franchise that like only that franchise and despise the other, I believe the two fandoms intersect more than most people realize. I like both, and I think most people who like one or the other also like the other one, as well. Of course it's hard not to like one more than the other, but I can be more of a Star Trek fan and still love Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca.
