Why is there so much hostility against the census?

Tip for best answer: M$1.01
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In my opinion this is rooted in a combination of factors common to certain swaths of the American public.

1. Distrust of government.
2. Privacy concerns.
3. Lack of civic consciousness.
4. Political considerations (e.g. if the supporters of the other party are not fully counted because they can be frightened of the census then *my* party gets a boost).

There are other contributing factors such as:

5. Some are concerned about immigration status.
6. Some are committing fraud (e.g. social security, etc.) and prefer not to be found out.
7. There is massive lack of understanding of the importance to the community of properly counting the population - the more people are counted, the more federal support, government representation, etc.

I think people just don't like being counted...they feel it's an invasion of their privacy. What they don't realize is how much being "counted" impacts and helps the community, such as the amount of votes in the electoral college is alloted.
