Why is there a 25% leakage in terms of converting between USD and Mahalo Dollar?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Moneycowboy answered it pretty well I think:

"Mahalo is the medium of information exchange, and has done the work of providing a smooth, visually pleasing interface to bring people together in order to exchange information. The non-technical person is not aware of how difficult this is. I assure you, it is a major project.

The 25 cents on the dollar is a tax that is intended to keep Mahalo up and running as a great source of info. Think about another wonderful free service and source of information, such as Wikipedia, and note that they are very squeezed financially.

There are a few other benefits of this business model:

1)The 25 cent tax provides incentive for quality questions and answers. Have you ever seen a forum that was ruined by people who trash one another? Have you ever received SPAM in your email inbox. What if each email cost one cent?

2) A service such as this could easily be used for money laundering if there were not such a tax.

3) This 25 cents might not be permanent, but is necessary to cover costs in the early stages of business. Once Mahalo achieves a quality base of users and some notoriety, it would be more reasonable for this tax to shrink. (No guarantees, but this would make economic sense)"

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When users have made more than M$40 by answering questions, they can remove the money from Mahalo Answers, minus a 25% fee. This fee is how Mahalo Answers turns a profit and is part of the cost of keeping this service available.

Our CEO, Jason Calacanis, discusses this and some other matters concerning the launch of Mahalo Answers, in his latest mailing list e-mail.

My flip answer is the image. My guesstimate is that there is overhead involved in making M.A. work properly, the percentage is to fund that overhead.

Nothing is free, the 25% assessment is the revenue that Mahalo collects.
