Why is the Verizon iPhone better than the ATT iPhone?

The iPhone is finally coming out for Verizon Wireless! What will be the advantages of having the iPhone for Verizon instead of AT&T? Better service?

1. Better coverage (Depends on your location)
2. iPhone can act as Wi-fi device for up to 5 other devices
3. Newer antenna design (The antennagate issue according to early reports suggests no signal loss problems as of yet)
4. There is no need for a sim card as CDMA does not require sim cards like GSM networks
5. There is the option for a data plan that allows unlimited data (AT&T doesn't offer a data plan like this)

I know you didn't ask for negatives but here are the main ones:
- Can't be on a phone call and access internet at same time like you can on AT&T (Might not be that big of an issue for some) This also means you won't be able to Facetime over the CDMA network (Facetime will become available on AT&T later on as promised by Apple) You can't Facetime over CDMA as that uses a data connection which can't be active at the same time as a call
- iPhone 5 is likely only a few months away and you will probably be able to get a CDMA Verizon iPhone 5 around June/July
- Current iPhone 4 cases and bumpers will likely not work (Not an issue if you don't currently own any but be careful when you buy new ones that say they are for the iPhone 4 but they may not fit)
- AT&T has rollover for minutes so if you don't use all your minutes one month you'll have extra the next month whereas you have to stick to the number of minutes you have for that month of Verizon.

Hope that helps you in your decision. Let us know if you decide to buy it :D

Great answer with sources listed!

1. Coverage for me wouldn't really change... I had Verizon for years before I got the iPhone 3GS
2. This is the best feature by far in my opinion.
3. Will be interesting to see if this clears up antenna gate issues... I had heard they had to change antenna for CDMA network as well.
4. I actually like the concept of a sim card, but I can see how it might be a hassel for some.
5. I have an unlimited data plan on my iPhone, but that's grandfathered in and not available to new customers... that said the most I've ever used in one month was a little over 700MB

my 2 year contract is up this summer but I'm leaning towards staying with ATT because I like the safety of rollover minutes and I actually use voice and data at the same time to realize I'd miss it. Coverage and dropped calls haven't been a problem for about 10 months now.

Obviously, there's the change from GSM to CDMA, which means the phone won't be able to use voice and data simultaneously with current CDMA technology. Also, the Verizon iPhone will have mobile hot-spot capability, while the AT&T one does not. In the chart below, we've tried to document the differences between the two phones. While Verizon has not told us the iPhone 4's data plan, we've included the carrier's data plan on its current smartphones for the time being.

1. Better coverage.
2. Verizon has less complaints via costumer support
3. Verizon phones are durable and long lasting.
4. The iPhone is an awesome 4G phone.. (lol) and Verizon just compliments it.
5. You won't get ANY dropped calls on Verizon (im an experienced verizon lover.)
6. Verizon is just an awesome carrier. Whenever your iPhone contract is over, you can always choose from tons of other phones, or just buy another iPhone. There are NO phones similar to the iPhone with AT&T

3. Verizon phones are durable??? - it's still made by Apple... to be more precise, it's made by Foxconn for Apple. There should be no difference in durability.

4. The iPhone (Verizon or AT&T) is NOT 4G

6. What do you mean there are NO similar phones on AT&T??? they've got Blackberry, Windows Phone7, and Android smart phones that allow you to install apps and use a large touch screen... on top of that, they've got the iPhone itself... that's exactly the iPhone.

If you live in a city coverage might be about the same, and the phone itself is the same - so it comes down to who can offer you a cheaper plan and who has better customer service. If you live in a really remote location, like me, the carrier makes a total difference - as no one but AT & T can ever seem to offer coverage at my house, I've tried them all!

Some places have better service on Verizon and other places have better service from AT&T. The only other advantage of Verizon's version of the iPhone is the WiFi tethering which allows the Verizon iPhone to be used as a WiFi hotspot.
