Why is the Sci-Fi channel changing its name to the SyFy channel?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Because Sci-fi is short for Science Fiction. Since that network really doesn't do that type of programming any more, what with "monster of the week" horror movies and wrestling, they have decided to rebrand to something that reflects more accurately their more diverse programming.

Although I'm ranting, I'm not actually inaccurate. According to quote in recent NY Times article, one of the reasons is:

“If you ask people their default perceptions of Sci Fi, they list space, aliens and the future,” he added. “That didn’t capture the full landscape of fantasy entertainment: the paranormal, the supernatural, action and adventure, superheroes.”

So they are trying to "expand" their entertainment lineup.

Also, the odd spelling is more easily trademarkeable.

I suppose it's good that they didn't go with the other option, re-naming it "Beyond."

The network wants to trademark the name and since sci-fi is a generic term relating to futuristic ideas and publications it can NOT be trademarked but Sy-Fy can...

As they state on their website, it's to create an ownable trademark that can be applied across a spectrum of properties (i.e. SyFy Films, SyFy Games, SyFy Comics, etc.). Which suggests that they could not obtain an ownable trademark on "SCI-FI". It's largely a marketing & branding play, without phonetically changing the name of the company.
