Why is the MPAA coming down so hard on RealNetworks when there are many other apps out there that rip DVDs?

Because the MPAA is simply mind-bogglingly stupid. The irony here is that Real Networks is doing everything possible to obey the law. They are not only NOT breaking the copy protection (which would break the law), they are leaving it intact and adding their own layer of protection.
By treating everyone as pirates, the MPAA is going to wind up getting the law changed to make the normal behavior of taking a DVD that you bought and putting it on your iPod legal. They absolutely deserve it.
