Why is the gospel of John so different from the other three gospels?

The fourth gospel in the Christian New Testament is very different from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The fourth gospel is attributed to the Apostle John. The narrative completely skips the birth of Jesus, and begins its witness of the life of Jesus from the point where Jesus meets John the Baptist. The text flows much differently than the other gospels as well, and makes much bolder claims about Jesus. Why do you think that there are there so many differences between this gospel and the other three gospels?

1. The book of John was written many years after the synoptic gospels, thus it has a different perspective perhaps based on the interpretation of Christianity within a different group or by the individual who wrote the book.

2. Because the book was written so long after the other gospels (about 20 years or so after the destruction of the Jewish temples), it has a different purpose, one that is meant to add clarity, purpose and meaning to some of the previous gospels, not historical content (although there are some accounts in John of acts of Jesus which aren't found in the other gospels). Some believe that the book was written to show that Jesus and God were one and the same.

3. There is also a theory that a second person altered the content of the original author, adding things, like Jesus carrying the cross to Golgatha, to make him seem stronger. So there may be the content of two authors.

I don't mean to cheapen the question with a simple answer but John the Beloved was writing what he felt was important as guided by the Spirit.

Not everyone who experiences similar events will document it in the same way. I find it helpful and refreshing to read varied reports. But I also understand that God's hand was instrumental in the writing of all the books.

Accepting that viewpoint allows me to focus on the content as being important, not random, as my answer may suggest. I haven't experienced a personal revelation in that regard however so my speculative response is all I had to offer.
