Why is The Empire Strikes Back the best film in the Star Wars series?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Empire Strikes Back was a darker film. The focus wasn't on cute and cuddly critters, it was on the nasty stuff that the Empire was capable of doing - it ended on a down note. Doing that takes a brave director.

It is discussed at length in Kevin Smith's Clerks. I tend to agree with Dante's point of view.

Simple: AT-AT Imperial Walkers. Yes, the me of today would have agreed with the dark plot lines, ending, etc. But the teen age me of the movie's premiere enjoyed the big walking armored robot dogs the most. Sure the stop motion looks a little dated today, but back then that was pretty much one of the coolest things ever!

I agree. I LOVED the Imperial Walker and Snowspeeder scene when I was a kid. The rest was more adult themed at the time. Now, I love all of it especially the "I love you", "I know" thing haha!

I agree with those saying it introduces Yoda, but I think they fail to mention the introduction of the coolest, starkest, calculating figure in Boba Fett. Bounty Hunters are the baddest of the bad. I remember going as a bounty hunter that year for Halloween because he was the awesome.

It took two major characters and linked them in a way that no one would have ever guessed. If you saw Star Wars before Empire Strikes Back - and you didn't know the ending - you were surprised. Plain and simple. This was a twist far exceeding the level of the Sixth Sense.

Also, it was a darker movie. Probed deeper into all characters. Left everyone wanting more. Too bad what we got was stuffed animals in tree houses.

Oh, and maybe it was the best because it wasn't directed by George Lucas :)

The Empire Strikes Back" has been, is now, and always will be the best film in the series. "Star Wars" was a benchmark in sc-fi film history, no question. But TESB raised the stakes on everything from the first film, and hit us with some superb dramatic darkness.

This is the best movie by popular opinion because it caught the views from start to finish. You had the huge battle on Hoth, which I might add it is not easy to bring those AT-AT walkers down with the fliers in the video games. Once the fight was over Skywalker went to Yoda and learned the ways of the force, or at least one more step towards it. The viewers find out that Vader is Luke father, lovely foreshadowing in Luke's training. Solo "gets" the girl when his ship is stuck inside the belly of the cave beast. There is the betrayal that gets Solo captured and then the great fight between Vader and Luke. The overall movie ends on somewhat of a down note with Luke missing his human hand and Solo taken off frozen. The movie does now what it did then, makes the viewers want to know more. It draws them into the world of Star Wars and holds them there waiting for the happy ending, which does come but only after more great battles.
