Conceptually, the first ten amendments to the Constitution are important because they protect the rights of US citizens from being limited by the federal government. This means that the national government must allow you freedom of speech, cannot house troops in your home during peace, etc, without a very valid reason. How "valid" this reason is is usually decided by the court. For example, the Supreme Court has ruled that a person may publish anything they want, unless it is obscene, or incites a crime, and so forth. The Bill of Rights does NOT guarantee protection of your rights from other citizens or the state governments (although many of the states are now required to obey the Bill of Rights due to a process called selective incorporation)
Historically, the Bill of Rights was created to convince those states who were against a strong government to ratify the Constitution. So if the Bill of Rights had never been created, there may not have been a United States of America.
