Well, like any successful band their music made them famous. They became famous when they signed to a major record label (DGC Records) in 1990 and the release of their second album in 1991, Nevermind. With the hit track "Smells Like Teen Spirit," they sold out concerts in tours fast and sold quite a few records. Developing a fanbase with "Smells Like Teen Spirit," they became a successful band. The album, itself, has since gone Diamond in US and Canada and 2x Platinum in the UK.
Alongside their commercial success with Nevermind developing a steadily growing fanbase, In Utero (their third and last album) was also a success.
Unfortunately, a part of Nirvana's success is due to publicity of Kurt Cobain's suicide. Making headline news for over a month and still today talked about. Whether it be those who think it was a murder rather than suicide, or people just noting the tradgic death of a young and aspiring musician.
I hope this helps you.
