There are two books: Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond and The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins that can help explain why we think opposable thumbs make us god-worthy. As far as us being petulant and ignorant when it comes to diversity, I think it's a human condition that we're slowly recovering from. I hope.
