Why is learning the parts of speech important?
I know it's important to be able to use words and grammer correctly in order to write and speak clearly and effectively. But to know what every word is in terms of parts of speech and verb tenses doesn't seem all that important. Yet every student is taught this in school. Why?

The different parts of speech actually answer the basic questions of Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How. Nouns and pronouns answer "who" and "what", adverbs answer "when" and "how". There are descriptive terms (adjectives and adverbs) that give you a better picture of the sentence being read. Verbs, of course, add action. Then, to further describe the situation within the sentence, you can add phrases with prepositions and conjunctions. It is the difference between "Lisa ate soup." and "I quickly ate my delicious soup so I could go outside to play."
