Why is it that standard international mail takes so very long (ie: India to states)? It seems as though a carrier pigeon would be quicker.

It is a long distance. If it were practical to use a carrier pigeon, that would take about 20 weeks. Actual snail mail generally takes 3 to 4 four weeks. An actual snail would take about 400 years.
