Here is an interesting test. Close your eyes the next time a commercial comes on, often times you can tell exaclty what is going on even if you are not watching that way even if you wander around the commercial may still work.
It is a bit of a backfire in some houses though as I know quite a few people who simply mute the TV the moment the commercials come up.
