Why is it that in real life mice are reviled and feared, yet in books and movies, mice are heroic and cute and lovable (e.g . Mickey Mouse)
More examples are the books "Fredericks Fables", "I am a Mouse" as well as Mickey Mouse, Mighty Mouse, Tom & Jerry, Minute Mouse and dozens of others. With the exception of "Ben" and "Ratatouille", rats have not been portrayed sympathetically to my knowledge. Why are there no cute, lovable, heroic termites or opossums or cockroaches (except "Twilight of the Cockroaches") in books and movies?

Mice are cute and lovable and many people keep them as pets. However, wild mice become a nuisance if they invade a home. They chew up things and can ruin food.
Mice are smaller and cuter than rats, but people keep those as pets too. Just how many movies with rats as heroes do you want?
Opossums are not pests at all. The most famous cartoon opossum is Pogo, one of the classic comic strip characters of all time.
Cockroaches are not cute, but they have been portrayed sympathetically from time to time. For instance, the classic Archie in a novel, and the sidekick in Wall-e.
Termites are not cute. I can't think of any examples of termites being heroes. They are enemies in at least one movie about ants (there have been several movies with ants as the heroes).
Overall, small cute animals get more cartoon parts. Humans generally like fellow vertebrates and would like to pet or cuddle them when it is practical and safe. That's why petting zoos are popular.
