Why is it that Firefox uses so much more of the cpu than Safari on macbooks?
For an equivalent number of windows open (about 5), the relative cpu usage for Firefox is consistently above 20%, while for Safari, it is mostly below 10%, with occasional bursts to 20%. I have installed addblock for Firefox and a similar program for Safari to reduce cpu usage by Adobe Flash for each, but Firefox keeps eating up the cpu. I am doing some adjustments to keep a macbook pro cooler. Clicktoflash seems to work to a large degree for Safari.

Safari is optimized for the Mac, that could have something to do with it. You can go into the Firefox preferences and behind the scenes to tweak even more what Firefox does and doesn't do during an open session. But to save trouble I'd just use the browser that already does what you want it to.
