Why is it easier to get into a satellite campus than a University main campus?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

After having worked at about four different colleges and universities over the years and having attended three different colleges, I do not believe that satellite campuses have different application processes.

You apply to the college or university through the main campus and you then choose where you sign up for classes. The application will not be different nor will your ability to get in be based on where you take the classes (as in which campus).

The only exception that I can think of to this rule is a college I worked for with a campus on a military base that catered to the military personnel and their families. I think they had their own application process, but I am not certain of this. Most satellite campuses have a basic staff set, and many of the professors may actually work out of the main campus unless the branches are too far away. Then you will most likely have local people working. However, in that case, depending on the size of the campus, that also means that the people teaching the classes are adjunct (part-time) faculty.

I know at the University of Tennessee all of the campuses have a different admissions process, their applications are evaluated at separate admissions offices, and it is much easier to get into the satellite campuses than the main one.

Students who seem qualified to attend the main campus but are still border line can be accepted to a satellite campus more easily because this reduces the amount the main campus accepts underqualified people. That's my hypothesis based on working in Bryn Mawr and working with people from U Penn, Penn State, and Ohio State.
