Why is it called Xbox 360?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The term Xbox and 360 are both marketing, brand based names that have no real meaning. They were coined and combined by Microsoft as part of it's effort to create a 360 or "all encompassing" system.

This all encompassing theory combined with "360" being easily identified (branded) with an orb / sphere make it a strong addition to the Xbox name that was established in the previous generation of consoles.

As a PS3 owner, I prefer the explanation illustrated in this cartoon:

Although, truth be known, I think that the Xbox 360 is a great system. I just bought a PS3 is all.

Interestingly, Microsoft was (reportedly) going back and forth between adding the "360" to the Xbox brand and "Pure". In my mind, both represent a holistic view to entertainment and would appropriately name this generation of console.

They are saying that they have made a "full circle" from the original XBOX as they progress into the Next-Gen gaming era. The original XBOX while great, had a lot of short-comings and they have learned from it, and really "turned around" to make an excellent product in the XBOX 360.

As various Microsoft executives have noted, Xbox 2 is a fine name until you realize that Sony's next machine will be called the PlayStation 3, which sounds newer and more powerful. The Xbox 360 name was chosen to imply that the gamer is at the center of the Xbox experience.

I'm going to shoot from the hip here and say that it was a branding decision because Microsoft didn't want the X-Box "2" to go up against a Playstation "3." That sort of subtle branding is the bread and butter of marketing.

I'll research a bit and if I find anything else, I'll update.
