According to an article I've read at sportsillustrated.com Gregg Popovich is a good coach because:
1. He made Tim Duncan listen to him and has made the Spurs a model franchise across the INBA.
2. He made an impact in his atheletes: like Kerr who didn't wear Spurs uniform until he was 33, but his four seasons with Popovich had a lasting impact.
3. Popovich had a lasting impact and influence around the league than anybody.
4. He was able to create an organization that is fruitful and continue to mulitply:
----quote----
Cavs coach Mike Brown was a longtime assistant to Popovich, and Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro spent almost half of his career playing for him. Avery Johnson coached the Mavericks to the 2006 Finals by applying principles learned from Popovich, and former coaches Terry Porter and P.J. Carlesimo were hired as graduates of the Spurs' school. Four of the last 10 Coach of the Year awards have been won by Popovich or someone he mentored, including Boston's Doc Rivers.
