Folic acid is an essential form of B-vitamins. They play a role in the prevention of birth defects among babies. They also contribute in the development of baby’s brain while inside the mother’s womb. Folic acid is important for blood and protein production as well as in the proper functioning of enzymes. This vitamin is responsible for cell division and it helps the body to create and maintain DNA and RNA, which are the building blocks of the body. Folic acid is required especially for expecting mothers for the proper formation of red blood cells and metabolism of protein for energy.

Folic acid can be found in many food sources and supplements. They can be found abundantly in green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce, and spinach. Citrus fruits, oranges, legumes, grapefruits, bananas, bread, and fortified breakfast cereals are also great sources of folic acid.

“Folic acid B9 is used to make the extra blood your body needs during pregnancy. All women of childbearing age should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid a day” (American Pregnancy Association, 2008).

You can get folic acid from the following foods:
• Leafy green vegetables, such as a large spinach salad
• Citrus fruits, such as orange juice
• Beans
• Breads
• Cereals
• Rice
• Pastas

Folic Acid can also be found in vitamins. Many of the above foods may not contain enough folic acid to meet the daily requirement.

In addition, having adequate folic acid in the body before and during pregnancy can prevent birth defects to the brain and spine. Neural tube defects (NTDs) are detected by testing the mother’s blood. “Unfortunately, the full potential of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects has not been realized…” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999).
