Why is dry skin worse in the Winter when you would expect more moisture in the air with the rain and all?

Warm air can hold more water than cold air. The air is ( on average ) much drier in the cold months than in the summer months. This is noticeable especially in your nasal passages and usually your lips. It also shows up in your skin.

It is really bad when the dry air filters into your home, then you heat it up and since warm air is capable of holding much more water than the same amount of cold air, the relative humidity drops and the air starts trying to absorb water from the surroundings. - You.

Neat site from Australia with humidity calculator and chart on humdity levels and temperature. FYI it's in celsius, so 30 celsius = about 86 Fahrenheit, and 0 Celsius = 32 Fahrenheit.

there is no humidity in the air during the winter,
buying a small humidifier from CVS is a good way to keep your skin from drying out, as a good eight hour sleep in a humid room every night, followed by lotion will keep your skin constantly moisturized.

Dry skin is a very common skin problem and is often worse during the winter when environmental humidity is low (i.e., "winter itch"). It can occur at all ages and in people with or without other skin problems.
