All of the Brigham Young University sports teams are called Cougars. This dates at least back to 1947 when the Cougar Fight Song was written. Big Cats of various species are extremely popular as names for sports teams, including college teams, because they are strong and fast. The cougar was probably selected because actual cougars live in the mountains overlooking Provo, Utah, where the university is located.
