Why if leprosy is so easy to treat are there still 200,000+ sufferers of this disease left around the world?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Ah, another one of those challenging world perils... Only working hard, together, can we hope to improve the situation! Working hard against this disease in the past has put it mostly into remission. For that we should be grateful!

Antibiotic treatment of the Leprosy bacteria is a cure, but this does require extensive medical treatment. Many countries with higher leprosy cases do not have enough properly trained medical staff, or funds for medication and treatment.

Charities and medical organizations are working to offer important preventative education such as proper hygiene and quarantine. This is great, and is the best solution of all.

I recently watched a documentary/fund raiser for this issue. There are organizations working to send experienced, volunteer medical staff to these countries to help irradiate the rampancy of leprosy.

As always, respectfully stated, I am not a doctor or a medical professional.

Here are interesting articles from a "medical TV website".

Wow... I had absolutely NO idea this was such a widespread disease even now.

I'm afraid I know very little about it, but I just had to respond as I'm so shocked!
