Why have Shakespeare's plays lasted through modern times?
I understand why Shakespeare himself should be celebrated. He contributed much to the English language, was a major influence in the translation of the Bible (I forget which version) and he transformed the profession of acting and theatre. But why are his plays still celebrated? The settings, customs, and language seem irrelevant today, and I doubt that people can really relate to someone as melodramatic as the Shakespearean tragic hero.
