Why don't they make refrigerators openable from the inside? Are they afraid something might get out?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You know that old saying about cooking steaks rare: "I like it when my steak still moo's." Well, some people like it so rare it can still kick and run... :-P

Actually, walk in refrigerators and freezers have this feature, or something close to it. They often come equipped with a latch, a normal-ish handle on the outside and a quick release lever or plunger on the inside. These types of units are commonly used in the food service and chemical/biology science industries. To my knowledge, nearly all fast food restaurants have both walk-in freezers and refrigerators.
This feature was actually part of CSI (Las Vegas) Season 8 Episode 8: You Kill Me: http://wetalkmedia.net/csi-miami-new-york-las-vegas/11039-you-kill-me-episode-8-season-8-a/

On consumer grade units, both upright and chest, I have not commonly seen latches. Therefore, I would assume that no interior release would be necessary to open the unit, unless it was locked shut. Locks seem to be common on chest freezers, but usually must be activated manually after the unit has been closed. A closed, consumer-grade refrigerator or freezer is usually kept shut by some kind of lite weight rolling bearing in the hinge or an air tight seal around the door. Both are easily overcome when you pull the handle to open the door from the outside. I would expect that pushing on the inside of the door would allow someone to easily open it from the inside, too.

I should add from personal experience that I have had a fridge door open from the inside. The mini-fridge in my office to be exact. I stuffed a carton of strawberries in there and squeezed the door shut on them. After about an hour the door slowly and gently slid open.

I guess because it would be a useless feature (because how many people find themselves in a fridge), and if they had a handle on the inside, it might mess with the ability of the fridge to close.
