Why don't they make flat-bottom soda bottles?

They always tip over in the fridge.

I have to assume that the bottom of plastic soda bottles are designed that way because the pressure from the CO2 in the bottle would force a "flat" bottom to push out, creating a slight bump that would make the bottle impossible to stand.

I like spoon's answer, but I'm going to go a different route. They do it because they're supposed to be giving you X ounces of soda, but they probably subtract a number of ounces by making the bottom all kinds of crazy shapes, and therefore reduce costs of manufacturing.

Mine is kind of a conspiracy theory type of thing. I'm sure they don't have QA testers re-measuring the exact ounces, and I sort of think they're really telling you a 20 oz. bottle of coke is 20 ounces when it's really more like 18.5 oz after they fiddle with the bottom. It also makes it more stable, but I think they're probably cheating us out of fluid. It saves them a couple of cents per bottle, you know.

I'd have to agree, but I would clarify. You get 12 oz in a standard can soda, but if the bottom was flattened out the can would hold more, but if you curve the bottom of it upward you reduce the total volume of the container without reducing the APPEARANCE of the size. Point: They do it so the container still looks big, but holds less.

It also helps when stacking bottles in larger quantities. The cap nests inside the recessed bottom so it will not slide off as easily.

Nope, after measuring in a separate cup, taring (taking the weight of the cup away), a 20 oz Dr Pepper is 20 oz. No clue why they do it, but it's still 20 fluid ounces.

Meant to reply to bmlhailstone.. Oops!
