Why don't the Special Olympics get any media coverage? Doesn't America love a good underdog story?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Why is it an underdog story? The special Olympics folks compete against each other as fairly as can be managed.

The question is, does anyone want to watch? I don't think anyone except friends and family of the contestants does want to watch. Few viewers, thus little media coverage.

America loves a good underdog story, unless there is a celebrity scandal or disaster to be reported on instead. It's sad, but it's true. And with the huge controversies lately surrounding Chris Brown, Michael Phelps, A-Rod, Roberto Alomar, etc. the media has their hands full trying to feed the Hollywood machine and give everybody updates on pathetic celebrities instead if reporting on stuff that actually matters.

The fact is, news outlets and media are a business just like any other company; they want to make money. Unfortunately to them, a report on the Special Olympics doesn't reel in the viewers like 'SHOCKING NEW DETAILS IN THE CHRIS BROWN ASSAULT CASE!' Hell, look at the Mahalo Answers questions; how many of them are about stupid celebrity BS instead of stuff that matters? Too many.

It's not so much about a problem with the media as it is a problem with a culture so obsessed with inane, meaningless crap that it forces the media to feed their desires.
