Why don't the judges stop the grunting and groaning? It makes me think the other player is hurt. It's annoying and distracting to observers.

When I played, I'd think my opponent has been hurt and it would affect my game. I think it's used to annoy and upset the other player.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Actually, I watched a match once where one of the players did get a warning from the judge for loud screaming every time she hit the ball. In that case, it seemed clear that it wasn't her intention to affect the outcome of the match but simply how she dealt with the intensity of the game.

In this case, it was the judge's discretion that the players screams were a "hindrance" to the other player, although that may have been a bit of an extreme interpretation (see p.22 "hindrance" of Rules http://www.usta.com/USTA/Home/AboutUs/~/media/USTA/Document%20Assets/2007/02/09/doc_13_16051.ashx).

I can't recall who the player that got cited was, but I have a suspicion it was Maria Sharapova (see for example http://www.audiomasterclass.com/arc.cfm?a=how-loud-is-a-female-tennis-players-grunt).

I just heard Monica Seles on an NPR program. She has the most distinctive grunt in tennis... She said she's always grunted and never notices it. That's just the way the expends energy. She also mentioned that Connors was well known for his grunting as well.

I don't think it's being done on purpose. In fact, I think it's a good breathing technique...

Sorry but any tactic is fair as long as it doesn't break the rules. I'm not sure you can't even just out and out start shouting at the other player. Like HEY BATTER BATTER SWING BATTER!
