Why don't more people vote more ?

Tip for best answer: M$1.66
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

On Mahalo Answers?
I think people do not vote more because there is not a lot of immediate reward for the voter involved but I think Mahalo has a plan for this in the near future. Some folks might misunderstand the guidelines of how and why we vote here. We used to get 1 point for 1 vote so that made getting to the next belt level a lot easier and a lot of people voted pretty often, many people voted daily to their limits

In American elections?
- The feeling that their vote will not matter.
- Complacency/Laziness.
- Voting is not required.
- Not enough real information on the candidates (all fluffy and attack ads).
- Jaded by the results of past elections.
- Sheep syndrome (the're happy to let others decide for them)
- Distrust/Misunderstanding of "electoral collage"
- Very poor candidate selection, "Why vote when both candidates are awful?"
- No immediate material gratification after voting.

I love to vote and do so in every election possible and as often as they let me. I just changed my party affiliation from Democrat to Independent so I could vote in the Republican primary election. .. I just could not allow Ovide Lamontagne to even win a primary here in NH because to me anyone would have been better. I really just feel that if I do not vote I have let my country down and then have no right to complain.

You're right giving all of ones money back to the community is great but one can go Mahalo broke pretty quickly. There are two types of "voting" here on Mahalo Answers and I am not exactly sure which is being asked about in this question.

1. Team Tipping - This is the interesting vote that costs at least a penny each time but does not help out in deciding who amongst the answerers will earn the best answer.

2. Helpful/Unhelpful - This type of voting is always free and is the type of voting that decides who earns the best answer. This is the type of voting that we as responsible Mahaloians need to make a conscious effort to do more of because there are a ton of undecided questions under the Expiring Questions tab that will be closed and the best answer decided if we all grab a page of them and vote.

Unfortunately, I am unable to vote because I am not a "high enough belt" but maybe because some people skip on the points or are unable to vote.

It is only a matter of time grasshopper...I think Mahalo keeps new users from voting to prevent gaming the system.

I just started, and I ask a lot of questions, AND plan to... and in truth, I tip out psychological and philosophical questions the most- which are few (I think I'm the primary asker of them) OR people don't label them.
I also find I run out of money fast. But... been here 4 days I think. or is it 6? I suppose I should answer more questions. heh. Broaden my scope... oh... a question on emotional intelligence... MINE!

What suggestions do people have for getting more people to vote (other than paying folks to vote--which will not work).

Do we have a badge for voting right now?

We do not have a badge as of yet (we should) but if we were to have a badge and/or a 1 vote = 1 point system I feel that a lot of questions would get closed sooner. The motivation to level up and get the next belt will be a great motivator made easier by bringing back the 1 point for 1 vote feature.

Edit - I have run into one issue with badges and voting where a new user though we already had badges for voting and therefore was voting good answers down in an effort to earn this not yet existing badge. We will just need to be very clear that voting down an answer for the points is really the wrong thing to do. Positivity first.

I agree with @buddawiggi on this issue.
There needs to be some sort of incentive to get out the vote, be it a badge or point per vote.
I've been away from MA for a few months now and since returning I have noticed a general lack of enthusiasm in MA overall.
The etiquette that was, in the past commonplace in MA when it came to voting seems to all but extinct, except for a handful of veteran members.

I think it seems as if there is a genuine feeling of indifference and apathy with American voters. It seems to be a common misconception that one vote simply does not matter in the grand scheme of things. There is a general mistrust of government and of its politicians, because some politicians don't seem to carry through with campaign promises. When people don't honestly believe that politicians care, they don't care enough to vote in their favor. Some people just don't vote unless they passionately favor their candidate, or passionately dislike their opponent. There also could be a genuine ignorance of their political platform or even the political issues, because most American voters are inundated with political campaign ads in which the candidates attack their opponents instead of clarifying personal stances on the issues that actually matter.
