Why doesn't The Sun have a name?

All the other celestial bodies have names...
Our Moon doesn't even have a name! Whats up with that?!

Reminds me of the B-52's song: "There's a moon in the sky. It's called The Moon..."

The Sun *is* it's name... It's called The Sun. Every other sun is just *a* sun, but ours is THE Sun.

Actually, they both have names. The star we call The Sun is just that.. a star. The name we've given it is Sun.

Our Moon also has a name... Moon. It is a satellite whose name is Moon.

Other planets have satellites some of whose names are, in no order:
Phobos,
Deimos,
Europa,
Callista,
Io
Ganymede
Thebe
Pan,
Phoebe...

There are many more satellites in our Solar System. Follow the link and it'll bring you to a page that has LOTS of information.
It is a disservice to all of us that we use the word "moon" for the satellites of other planets and the word "sun" for the stars of other systems. Planetary science is confusing enough without the media and Hollywood and even some scientists themselves using the wrong terminology.

Good question.

I believe that it is a reminder that we think we are the center of the universe, so it is "The Sun" as opposed to a sun. It is a wonder that those busy astologists haven't had the time to propose an official name to assign to our solar systems central star. And then there is "The Moon."

It wasn't that long ago that people thought that the earth was the center of the universe......

I have a good idea, why don't you start a campaign to name the sun and the moon. I am sure that it would capture the popular imagination.

Great observation!

@Coltech - Sol is also Latin (language which Spanish and many other languages are based on) for Sun, and a quick check at AdamColon's sources... yeah, Luna is Latin as well.

While those may be wrong (wiki sources), I don't see why they couldn't be right.

Sol is the spanish name for the sun and luna is the spanish name for the moon, so no, that is not the answer.

The Sun has no official name according to the International Astronomical Union. Neither does the Moon. However, I do not think these need official names. When you say the Moon (capitalized), everyone knows you are talking about Earth's only moon. Same goes with the Sun. The Sun and the Moon are both easily identifiable, which also contributes to the fact they don't have a name. Planets with more than one moon, or distant stars, can be hard to tell apart from each other so they name them to help distinguish them.
