Why doesn't sound come out unless my iPhone is connected to th e charger?
the iPhone will ring when someone calls, but no other sounds can be heard unless the phone is on the charger

Make sure your iPhone isn't on "Vibrate". I know this sounds daft, but I have done it before! I've also seen a couple of people with iPhones whose switches have broken (mine is going as well), meaning that flicking the switch does nothing, the phone is permanently stuck on Vibrate (or ring).
You can check this by flicking the switch and ensuring the on-screen dialogue does appear saying whether you are in Ring or Vibrate.
If this isn't the case, check your Settings > Sounds to ensure that everything is turned on.
