Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the container?

The glue also has a bit of space between it and the inner wall encasing it. Glue won't stick to something it isn't touching. :)

Glue does not have a space between it and the inside of the bottle. Open an elmer's glue bottle, or any other type of glue for that matter.

In short, it does. What keeps it from staying is the fact that the inside surface is incredibly smooth, with no grooves to adhere too. Also, since the glue isn't dry it won't adhere to anything.

I am referring of course to regular use glue, not wood working glue or other unstable types of glue that need to cure.

yes, notice that the inside of a glue bottle is smooth. It sticks, but runs and comes off easily. Even when dry. However, most other surfaces of microscopic pores and surfaces that the glue can seep into and once its there the glue can bond with it self and the things around it in order to cause the two objects to stay together. This has been demonstrated, and is the predominate way that glues work. The reason that rubber cement and PVC glue exist is because normal glue is not effective on their smooth surfaces. PVC and rubber cement use a chemical compound to melt the plastic / rubber to where it creates grooves, and is capable of melting parts of the plastic together.
