Why does this thing limit me to 100 characters?

I guess I can add details... Still, unexpected limit. I think it makes some sense though.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Think of it as the title to your question. You can then add details to your question underneath. But the limit allows people to scan the question to see if they want to read/answer it.

We need to get people to focus in their questions so we can show a large number of *readable* questions on the home page, search result pages and category pages.

If we let folks go longer we would have to truncate their questions on SERPs, listings pages, etc. So, a little focus I've found is a good thing. I've only hit the limit every 15 or so questions, and in those I rephrased to something snappy and gave details.

Because it is supposed to be a 'title'. You should be able to reasonably summarize your question in 100 chars, and add details in the next section. We display the 'title' *everywhere* the question appears in the system -- we want something that is 'at a glance', meant to be scanned. We don't want big blocks / paragraphs of text in the list-views. The 100 chars is a constraint that forces you to focus your thoughts.

This is of course, completely open for debate, but that is our thinking.
