Why does the world denigrate (at least once per quarter) one of my favorite movies, Costner's 'The Postman'? Good solid 1950's scifi.
It doesn't seem to matter what movie they are reviewing, every reviewer seems to throw in a gratuitous insult of 'The Postman' periodically. I really enjoy it.

Do you mean because it is like the SF of the 50's or because it was a remake? Well, most of the SF of the fifties was not very good. Costner does not seem to do his best work in SF. Even Waterworld was not very good, although it could have been. I think that when you give in to the temptation to make something that is "ripped right out of the headlines," it just seems trite.
The Postman could have been a good film if they were not so heavy handed at times. Waterworld would have been a much better film if they had not used the Exxon thing. They should have created a world not a message.

I don't mean the published stuff. That was great. Heinlein, Asimov, Williamson and the others. Until Weber and Flint, that was science fiction paradise.
50's scifi not good? Well, maybe from a 50 year perspective. For those of us reading it newly published, it was a joy. So there is a certain retro appreciation for those who recreate it. I agree that throwing the Exxon thing into Waterworld was wrong but who condemns an entire movie for one error? (Apparently all the literatii.)
