The flu turns into pneumonia when the lungs fill with mucous and become infected. The definition of pneumonia is “fluid in the lungs”. If a patient gets the flu and has a lot of mucous collect in his lungs that he can’t cough out, he can become ill with pneumonia. This is a very serious condition as fluid in the lungs interferes with their ability to take in oxygen and transfer it to the blood. Low oxygen levels in the blood can and do make the body’s organs shut down.
You can do several things to prevent the flu from turning into pneumonia. You can see your Primary Care Physician to get on an antiviral medication shortly after the onset of flu symptoms. Antivirals lessen the severity and shorten the duration of the flu. If you miss the forty-eight hour window in which antivirals are effective, you should do everything you can to thin and cough up mucous that accumulates in your lungs. Taking hot showers and baths, taking decongestants (especially lung decongestants) and drinking lots of fluids will help you loosen and cough up mucous from your lungs. This will help you prevent your flu from turning into pnuemonia.
