Snow shoveling can hurt your back for several reasons. You are probably bending from your waist while shoveling which is harder on the lower back. It's best to bend at the knees when doing any lifting. If you are throwing the snow off to the side then the twisting motion in doing do puts stress on the back. Putting too much snow on the shovel, increasing the weight, makes it difficult to move and again, more stress on the back. It's best to shovel just small amounts at a time (a few inches) and throwing it forward or lifting it, turning and then throwing it then twisting to throw it off to the side. There are some shovels that help minimize this strain. Do a search online for several types of snow removal devices that are effective at reducing lower back strain.
