Why does Popcorn Sutton have make the paste to seal the joints or possible leaks in his moonshine distilleries from natural ingredients?

He mentions the importance of the paste to seal leaks and the ingredients as Bran, Rye or Oatmeal. Are the use of these ingredients imperative? Why not use a commercial sealant of some sort?

I'm not a moonshiner, but I think his paste makes sense. Synthetic sealants might leach chemicals into the still and add undesirable flavors to the finished product. Also it's interesting that his pastes are grain-based, since various grains are the basis for most moonshine recipes. I wonder whether or not he matches his paste recipe to his 'shine recipe.

That makes sense, make the paste out of similar ingredients to the 'shine. Maybe he used it as a flavoring tweak for the 'shine

Two reasons actually.
1. So you don't kill, blind or otherwise harm your customers or yourself. Solder, like the radiators some folks use, leeches lead - remember alcohol is a solvent - and we all know the resuilts of lead poisoning. Other epoxy's etc may well contribute poisons at high temperature in combination with alcohol, so we don't take chances do we?

2. Yes, taste. Some of that stuff makes your run taste like old tires or worse.

remember, time, temperature and purity
