Moss is thicker on the north side of trees, if you are in the northern hemisphere. That is because moss lives in cool, damp, and dark places. The north side of most things (here in the north - I live in Maine) have shade most of the day because the sun is to our south. This causes the south side of things to be hotter, dryer, and brighter.

Its true in certain areas(the middle latitudes of the northern hemisphere) that moss grows thicker, and sometimes only on thenorth side of trees because there is just more sunlight to the north.

oops, there's more sunlight to the south, leaving the north side in shade.

To avoid the direct rays of the sun rising from the east and setting in the west

If the tree is sufficiently shaded, moss will grow on all sides of a tree. If the tree gets a lot of sun, there is only enough shade on the north side (in the northern hemisphere) to maintain the humidity and moisture that moss needs to grow and thrive. It's not the sunlight per se, but the moisture level that determines whether and where moss will grow on a tree.

moss plants grow in moist and shady places. the north side of a tree can provide this condition because it is usually not exposed to the sun . it does not mean however that it is always at this side where mosses can grow. as long as the place is shaded and has high moisture most of the time, then the moss can survive.
