Melanoma is a cancer that originates in the melanocytes of the skin. Consider this: Your skin is an organ. It is the largest organ of your body. Your skin is not very thick. A lump from a breast cancer 1 cm in diameter would be a small breast cancer but a huge melanoma. Given the thinness of your skin, a melanoma does not have to be very thick to spread beyond the skin. So basically it doesn't take much compared to other tumors. Melanomas tend to be measured in millimeters. Most other tumors tend to be measured in centimeters. However, if a melanoma is found early, before spreading, and the melanoma is thin, then surgery is usually curative.
There are four basic types of melanoma. The first three (superficial spreading melanoma, lentigo maligna, acral lentiginous melanoma) spread along the surface of the skin before penetrating deeper. The fourth type, nodular melanoma, is usually invasive from the beginning.
