Why does Mahalo email me to pick a best answer for a question which has no answers?

Mahalo has been buggy is recent times so there could be a number of reasons.
I would bet that the user who has answered your question has in some way violated the Mahalo terms of service and when they were banned from Mahalo their profile and all of their contributions were deleted as well. If this turns out to be the case then that answer would disappear but the Mahalo Answers best answer email notification system still thinks there is an answer to that question... so Mahalo sends you an email.
Technically that question will remain open until someone answers it and then you select a best answer or an answer gets voted as best by the Mahalo users but I think if we could see the question you are talking about we might be better able to get to the bottom of the cause.

@buddawiggi is correct, that question was answered by a banned user. This particular issue should actually be fixed soon.

I got the email just before 6pm today (Oct 12) telling me to choose a best answer. I was so confused when I got to the page and it had no answers.

No. I am talking about answers that I wrote to questions that are still present. This has nothing to do with spammers unless you have been erasing answers carelessly.

The issue is that many answers from spammers/TOS violators have been banned over the past months while I've been on Mahalo Answers. I've banned over 1,000 users and vanished over 10x more threads than that, so chances are a few answers are missing ;-) Not bugs ... quality and progress!
