Why does Japan wear blue shirts? Does the blue symbolize something?

Tip for best answer: M$0.75
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Japanese National Team's had not always been blue. Originally they wore white and red, which was in accordance with their national flag. This was back in the 80's. However, the two other major teams in East Asia also wore red. China's national team was white and red and so was South Korea. Japan wanted to distinguish themselves from the Chinese and the South Koreans. Therefore they started to change their uniform colors. In 1992 the uniform of Japan changed to red stripes and white diamond. In the mid-90's the Japanese uniform began to change to blue. They wore the blue uniforms first in 1998. And has continued to this day.

The color of BLUE symbolizes the blue ocean surrounding the island nation of Japan. It is also the representative Japanese dye color "Ai Iro (the blue color)" has been used many many years. As early as in 1936 Stockholm Olympics, the Japanese national football team played in blue uniform. There were a short period of time, the color of the uniform changed to red and white like other sport such as rugby, volleyball etc when the Japanese football team's performance struggled. Then, the color was switched back to the traditional blue uniform. Since then the Japanese football team's performance improved and finally made it back to the international tournaments. It is during the last decade that the blue was combined with "Samurai" and the team got "Samura Blue" nick name.
