Why does it seems as if so many people believe that homosexuality is a choice?

I do not feel like any of the folks I describe above.
If homosexuals tell us they are not choosing then I believe them.
I do have two personal references "Anthony" my 1st cousin and "Arthur" my uncle both are openly gay and live that lifestyle to the fullest. They have proclaimed over and over to family and friends throughout my youth and teenage years that they did not choose this.. they knew they were gay at an early age and 100% feel they were born gay. That is good enough for me.
Many folks feel addiction is a choice and that I must have chosen to drink and use drugs and made myself an addict by my own choices, I did not choose to be an addict, I was born an addict. I also think there is a possibility that the same train of though that gets these folks to that opinion is of the same ilk as the train of though that would lead someone to feel "gay" is a choice. They would say "Human instinct says breed with the opposite sex" and anything outside of that is a choice to forsake that basic human instinct and force upon themselves a free will choice to have sex with and like sex with a member of the same sex. I feel overall insecurity, fear, and misunderstanding leads these folks to pass judgments on us.
I feel that we the folks who would see "gay" as a born as trait and me that knows "addict' is a born as trait are just ahead of the game.. we understand and just know the truth before there is absolute proof. Like back in high school and Algebra 1, I just "got it" with that subject quite easily and would often do my homework without showing my work.. I somehow just could "see" the answer.. I feel the same here.. If you or anyone were to ask me to show my work on how I came to the conclusion that "born as" and not "chosen" applies to both addicts and homosexuals I would not really be able to but I do know the answer is right.

M$Probably this concept originates to enforce legal enforcement . If it is innate then Homo sexuality would become contradictory to tag it as a crime.
another reason i see is it gives moral boost(ego boost) to religious people who think homosexuality is taboo and they chose to become heterosexuals by choice and thus evaded evil with a great effort .( though how much funny it sounds )

M$Thank you for your answer. I wasn't basing my question on any statistics, but instead on my own life and experiences. I know a few people who have expressed to me that they think being gay is a choice. I'm not saying that there is a high prevalence of this, I'm merely saying the belief still exists to some extent. I should have been more clear, so I thank you for bringing that up.
