Why does Internet Explorer lock up on Mahalo home page and while attempting to post?

Are there settings I need to change or is the site?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have exactly the same problem with Internet Explorer and Mahalo Answers. I have problems using both IE6 and IE7. I have tried using several different computers.

On my new laptop with Vista and IE7, Mahalo Answers hangs Internet Explorer so hard that I can't even manually kill it through the task manager under processes. I have needed to reboot sometimes to get out of the nasty hang.

The Internet Explorer problem is largely why I stopped using Mahalo for a couple months after my initial excitement with the website. At some point, I could browse for only a little while but then it would lock. Every time I found a question I wanted to answer or started getting into browsing the site it would hang. Then I'd kill IE. Eventually it got extremely frustrating.

I finally installed Mozilla on several computers I use and it works well with Mahalo. However, I now know that at this time I cannot use Mahalo Answers if the only available installed browser is Internet Explorer.

I now keep a Mozilla open just for Mahalo and then use IE for everything else.

I tried the other answers and went to download Mozilla, but couldn't tell from the site which version to use. What Mozilla product are you using?

I'm currently using Mozilla Firefox. The About shows version 3.0.6.

IT WORKS LIKE A DREAM. I have high speed and every page I've opened was faster and no lags, light fluttering or sticking halfway through.

I've had trouble today using Mac with Safari while trying to post. I also have trouble with a Windows computer using IE, usually when I go to my profile page. I think the problem is with the site. You can email the problem to contact@mahalo.com. Good luck!

Since I have the same problem, and there were other users complaining about it - people using IE, as well as Firefox, Windows and OS, mobile phone browsers, etc... the issue seems to be site related, rather than due to any user's particular system configuration.

I've been experiencing this problem from the beginning, three weeks ago, it's kind of a permanent feature. Different people have suggested different workarounds, mainly centered around browser Java permissions and scripting settings, but none of it makes any difference - know this first hand - have checked the proposed "solutions" relevant to my system configuration (IE, Windows).

My next step will be to send a mail to Mahalo technical team - contact@mahalo.com - and I suggest that you do the same.

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks. I will see if any answers come through that I won't affect how well my laptop works with everything else.

Perhaps you are right. I started having the problem soon after Mahalo began and it continued to get worse as the weeks passed. Then I started having the same problem with other sites - always and only with Windows XP / Vista / V7beta and Internet explorer.

I have never liked FireFox so I have not tried it. What I do know is that when I switched to Chrome, about a week ago it has not happened a single time since.

I don't know why but I know it is not Mahalo.
I have the same problem with IE. I have five computers in my office. I have the same problem with all of them and it is with at least a dozen websites.
IE just feezes for as short as three minutes to as long as 30 minutes.

I have finally tossed Internet Explorer and installed Google Chrome. The problem has completely disappeared with Chrome. I recommend you consider it.

Since this is the ONLY site I have any problems with, I'll likely leave my laptop as is and put Google Chrome on an older PC that IE locks up on everything.....yours wasn't the answer for one problem I have but may well be for another I debated asking for my PC......thanks!

Funny, I did the same thing, but with Mozilla Firefox; well, not exactly. One day, I clicked to launch Firefox, and it wouldn't load anything but a blank screen. I then, download a new, and updated copy of Firefox, which did the exact same thing. I stopped using IE a long time ago. I use mostly Chrome now, but I also got Apple Safari. I prefer Google Chrome.

I think the "answer being slow" behavior has to do with Mahalo adding your answer text as URL attributes, which causes a slow second call during the answer process (when you go from the initial answer page to the confirm your answer page). It's definitely that first page submit that is the problem (there could also be a validation process in the background that is slow as well, it seems like all the site's AJAX code is slow under IE). It's one of these two factors, that I am pretty certain of.

Whatever the reason, there is something that you can do about this. If you limit your initial answer to a few words, then submit, this gets you quickly to the next page, and the next page you hit appears to have a proper post behavior and works just fine. Write as long an answer you want in that page (the "confirm your answer page"). Once you click submit the entire post is then sent to the server. Even if your page times out at this point the post still makes it into the Mahalo database. So this is a pretty sure fire way to get your answers in without any issue.

Try my suggestion, for your initial answer just type in "answer", hit submit and then in the confirm page write whatever it is you really wanted to say. You'll get past that lock-up and you'll be on your way to Mahalo riches.

P.S. Don't be too hard on the Mahalo guys, the answer-as-URL-parameters approach has some great benefits, even though its slow. If your page does time out you can just click refresh and the answer is not lost (in the old days, before the answer was in the URL string you really did lose your answer on a timeout).

Good luck!

Actually, it straight out freezes to the point I have to bring up task manager and log off because the entire laptop stops repsonding to anything as soon as I get to Mahalo.com. I do get it to work 1 time out of 5.
