Why does everyone go on vacation in August?

I don't know if everybody but a lot of people, especially students and those who live with students go on vacations in August. During the summer there's usualy something to do like camp, summer school or summer jobs. These are usually over by the end of July and there's a couple of weeks between summer plans end and school starts that gives space for vacations.
